R:DSAT Chapter 227 – Xuan’er

Translated by Uhei and edited by Cyrrene.

After nightfall, Luo Wei talked with Xie Yu in his own study at home about the affairs at court. They discussed everything, and at the end, they even talked about how Luo Zhiqiu wanted to arrange an engagement for Xie Yu with a family of fitting station1, yet Luo Wei did not talk about having met with Long Xing.

Wei Lan followed Luo Ze to the Fengwu General Zhao Henian’s residence as a guest. Luo Wei wasn’t against Wei Lan socialising with the generals in the army, and hence Luo Ze became all the more passionate about treating Wei Lan like he was the next Ning Fei.

The banquet in the palace was also at the peak of its rowdiness; it was a great show of happiness and prosperity2, both ruler and subjects sharing the same enjoyment. Heavenly music floated in the air as the dancers’ long skirts fluttered, powdered fragrance drifted3, it was truly an imperial banquet that would be reminisced4 for times to come after it was over.

The Chang clan’s lady sat in the wedding chamber of Hall of Literary Transcendence. It had been such a rowdy day, yet this place was so quiet she could hear the cry of insects outside the window. There were even six palace servants accompanying her in the house, but none of them spoke. The Chang clan lady heard this intermittent crying of insects, and grew even more nervous, even her palms were sweating. It was unknown how long she sat there for, right when the Chang clan lady thought this entire night would pass like this, the door was pushed open from the outside, and a litany of congratulations transmitted into the house. The Chang clan lady clasped both her hands together, and it was only by doing so that she could stop herself from shaking in front of others.

The Momo5 of Rites said the auspicious wedding sayings that had been passed down all these generations.

When the Chang clan lady heard the words ‘May you soon bear a treasured son’, her face couldn’t help but grow hot. Once the Momos no longer spoke, the Chang clan lady then heard a man’s voice say: “You may all leave, go out to receive your reward, you’re no longer needed here.” This should be her husband, the Second Prince Long Xuan then. This was the first time the Chang clan lady was hearing Long Xuan’s voice; it was certainly clear, mellow and mild in tone, but not a note of joy could be heard from it.

All the uninvolved people had been dismissed from the house, yet Long Xiang was still standing there.

“Why haven’t you left?” Long Xuan asked.

“You’ve drunk quite a bit today ah,” Long Xiang said: “Are you sure you can handle this tonight? How about getting Fu Yun to bring you a bowl of sobering soup?”

“Have you studied yourself silly?” Long Xuan tried to herd Long Xiang out of the house, “There are still a few younger brothers out front, you go host them on my behalf, just remember not to say anything that shouldn’t be said!”

“I blocked a few cups of wine for you, what words could I say that shouldn’t be spoken ah?” Long Xiang was pushed by Long Xuan out the door, and called out disgruntledly, “The lot of them too, because Imperial Father is over at San-ge’s place, they don’t dare go fuss with San-ge, and only stick here to fuss over your wedding. If any of them are that capable, I’d like to see them go to San-ge’s place ah!”

“Shut up!” Long Xuan rebuked Long Xiang fiercely: “You want me to give you a scolding even on a day like this?”

Long Xiang went to the front of the palace hall while muttering complaints in his mouth.

The Chang clan lady heard someone close the door to the room, and leaned her head to the side to listen carefully to the movements in the room. It seemed like there was only the two of them, her and Long Xuan in this house now.

Long Xuan took a glance at the Chang clan lady seated on the marital bed, her red veil was embroidered with the scenes of mandarin ducks’ courtship in water6 in gold thread. Long Xuan sat before the table, and took a piece of pastry to eat. He’d long been hungry; after bustling the whole night through, only now did Long Xuan have the time to eat something. Looking at the two gold-embroidered mandarin ducks, made Long Xuan think of the mandarin duck buckle that Luo Wei had again thrown into the Inked Pond, and his heart fell into disarray again. He served himself a cup of wine laid on the table, before he felt a bit better again.

The Chang clan lady had her head covered by the red veil and didn’t see, but had been listening closely to the movements in the room all this while. It’s just that princes had rules ingrained to them about their manner of eating since young, and could eat without sound nor stir. The Chang clan lady only knew that Long Xuan was in the room, but did not know what he was doing.

After Long Xuan ate some pastries, he walked right in front of the Chang clan lady.

The Chang clan lady sat silently, not noticing that Long Xuan was right in front of her.

Long Xuan extinguished the candle flame by the bedside with a wave of his hand.

Upon seeing the candlelight in the marital chamber had gone out, the old palace maids standing vigil outside the house revealed expressions of delight. It seemed the Second Prince and his spouse had settled for the night.

Long Xuan exited the house by climbing through the window. Fu Yun who had been standing guard beside the window immediately reported in a small voice when he saw Long Xuan coming out: “Your Highness, this slave has made all the preparations. What about the Prince Consort here?”

“You stand guard here,” Long Xuan lowered his voice and said: “Being a new bride for the first time she won’t take off her own veil, I’ll come back as soon as I am able to.”

“Yes,” Fu Yun said: “This slave will stand watch here.”

Long Xuan scaled the back wall of Hall of Literary Transcendence to get out, and managed to exit Hall of Literary Transcendence without being discovered by anyone.

“Your Highness?” In the marital chamber, the Chang clan lady plucked up her courage to call out, but after waiting for a good while no one replied to her. Chang clan lady didn’t know what had happened, the wedding night shouldn’t be like this, but the Chang clan lady didn’t have the guts to call out a second time, she could only wait miserably.

Tonight the Imperial Palace of Great Zhou would carry on the banquet until daybreak. Both ruler and subjects wouldn’t return until they were drunk. Yet within this gargantuan Imperial Palace, not every corner of it could be dyed with the air of festivity from the Princes’ grand wedding.

Take for instance the Hall of the Eastern Buddha deep within the palace, that enshrined the ancestral Buddha, yet was of no aid in cleansing the air of gloom from this palace hall.

Being a guard at the Hall of the Eastern Buddha was an undesirable job, just like today when two Princes were having their grand wedding and everyone ranked both high and lowly within the Palace got to receive rewards doled out by the Imperial family. Yet it was already late at night and no one had come to distribute reward money to this group of people.

“They couldn’t have forgotten about us could they?” There was a guard who couldn’t wait any longer, and asked their leader.

“It’s not just our place,” The leader of the guards comforted his subordinate: “In this Palace there is still the Cold palace, and the Lateral Courts7, and her Ladyship Concubine Liu’s E’ying Palace. Perhaps those areas haven’t received their reward either, those places are even worse-off than we are here.”

The guards looked in unison at their leader, as if to say, do you want to compare between matters weighing half a catty or eight taels8? Are we comparing who’s more tragic than the other?

“All of you just shut your mouths and do your work honestly,” The leader thought about his own words and also felt they were vapid, and said impatiently: “Would His Majesty shortchange us of our reward money? It counts as money in our eyes, but is that amount of silver considered money in His Majesty’s eyes?”

The guards were in the middle of such talk, when they saw that there was a steward eunuch leading his subordinate eunuchs this way.

“They’re distributing rewards now!” A guard called out in joy.

The leader wanted to rebuke this subordinate of his, but looking around at these people around him, each of them with their eyes lighting up, the leader decided to let it be. This was an abandoned area they had here, and could not be compared on equal standing with working at those good places like the Hall of Eternal Light. At those places you’d get reward money frequently; even if the Imperial family didn’t give rewards, the prominent officials often stuffed silver into those guards’ pockets. Then take a look at them, these Cold Palace guards who were also doing guard work, yet the comparison between these two groups of people could infuriate one to death.

The steward eunuch had begun to distribute reward money here according to the guards’ name register.

Not long after, another two eunuchs came carrying tiffins of food in both hands.

The leader looked at the eunuch walking in front; he knew him, it was the Imperial Kitchen gonggong that came to send meals to her Ladyship the Empress Dowager, “Why are you sending food so late today? The leader asked this gonggong.

“It’s the grand wedding of his Second Highness and Third Highness, this is especially ordered by the Emperor to be sent here for her Ladyship the Empress Dowager to partake in the joy,” This gonggong said.

“Then go on in,” The leader’s heart was occupied with thinking about his own share of the reward money, and seeing that this was a familiar face who came frequently to this Hall of the Eastern Buddha to run errands, so he didn’t ask in further detail. He ordered his subordinates to open a small door outside the Hall of the Eastern Buddha to let these two people in, and didn’t even cast a glance at the eunuch following behind this familiar one.

The Empress Dowager sat in a small shrine hall, in front of her sat a white porcelain Guanyin statue with a face of benevolence and pity in her eyes. The Empress Dowager silently recited Buddhist scripture, and with each line she read she knocked on the wooden fish once.

“Imperial Grandmother.”

Hearing this voice call out from behind her, the wooden mallet in the Empress Dowager’s hand fell to the ground. The Empress Dowager didn’t get up, but turned her body around rapidly while remaining seated. In front of her kneeled a person dressed in the robes of a lower-ranked eunuch. The Empress Dowager stared at this person’s face, opened her mouth for a long while before she managed to speak aloud: “Xuan’er!”

R:DSAT Chapter 226 – A Word of Truth

Translated by Cyrrene and edited by Uhei.

Long Xuan loosened his grip.

Luo Wei reached out and caught the mandarin duck buckle.

Seeing Luo Wei like this, Long Xuan had just now felt a trace of fondness, yet in the next moment he became cool and indifferent. He noticed Luo Wei, with a flick of his hand, had tossed the two halves of the mandarin duck buckle he had just separated back into the pond.

“The pool is where they should remain,” After tossing the mandarin duck buckle, he said to Long Xuan, “Why should something unfit to be seen1 reveal itself again?”

“You said you liked me, said it so many times before,” Long Xuan asked Luo Wei, “In these words, is there even a word of truth?”

“I…”

“I just want a word of truth.”

The breeze blew past Luo Wei’s eyes, bringing with it the warmth of late spring entering summer, redolent with the fragrance of hundreds of flowers. The words that had begun to form upon Luo Wei’s lips suddenly could not be uttered. He saw a deep grievance lurking within the depths of Long Xuan’s eyes. Luo Wei did not understand what Long Xuan had to feel quite aggrieved for; it was just that Luo Wei had never seen Long Xuan like this yet.

“I only want a word of truth from you,” Long Xuan said, “Is this request not considered too excessive?”

“I liked you,” Luo Wei brushed away the willow catkins that had fluttered onto his shoulder. When he raised his head, his face had already assumed his usual smile. “But right now, I no longer like you.”

Long Xuan wanted to extend his hand to tug Luo Wei’s sleeve, but was evaded by Luo Wei. After Long Xuan’s hand grasped emptiness, he had to lower his hand and asked, “Why? Was it because I threw away the mandarin ducks?”

“I already said I was not sensible back then.”

“Nobody can become sensible overnight. You changed too quickly; how can I believe what you say?”

“Because someone once asked me: if your Highness ascended the throne as emperor, what kind of outcome me and by extension the Youyan Luo clan will have,” Luo Wei said, “After I thought about this question, I finally realised that the former Luo Wei truly wasted his love in vain. If your Highness governs the country someday and becomes a sagacious ruler—that’s all well and good, but it has not even the least to do with Luo Wei.”

Long Xuan began to laugh grimly, and he asked Luo Wei, “Are you only living for the sake of the Luo family?”

Luo Wei said, “The Luo family gave birth to and raised me; should I not live for the Luo family? Even considering your Highness, can you truly live only for yourself?”

“Who is that person?” Long Xuan abruptly asked again.

“What?”

“Who was the one who asked you that question?”

“If I said it was your Highness, would your Highness believe me?” The corners of Luo Wei’s mouth quirked up into a jocular expression. This was the truth; Long Xuan taught him to clearly see this world of frosty wind and bloody rain2—warmth or coldness was the way of the world3—only that this person would not believe his words.

“I have said many things to you, except this question was not what I have asked you,” as expected, Long Xuan did not believe him.

“Your Highness need not be this way to this minor subject,” Luo Wei said, “Could it be that your Highness saw that this minor subject is useful, so wants to draw this minor subject to your side? Why so? I am surnamed Luo, and my surname cannot be changed throughout my whole life, so I can only do things that benefit the Luo family.”

“You think I am trying to draw you in?” Long Xuan reflexively blurted out.

“If not to draw me in, then what could it be?” Luo Wei said, “Is it even possible for your Highness to feel any sincerity towards me?”

When Luo Wei spoke such words aloud, it rendered Long Xuan speechless.

Fu Yun did not know what Long Xuan had planned to talk to Luo Wei about today. These two both made him fearful. Glancing at the little eunuchs from the Hall of the Gracious Phoenix standing before him, Fu Yun clenched his teeth, afraid that he would have to go to the Inked Pond.

“What is the matter?” Long Xuan and Luo Wei had been facing each other speechlessly. When he saw Fu Yun arrive, he let loose a single breath. He rarely took the initiative to ask Fu Yun.

Fu Yun could not guess at Long Xuan’s susceptibility to anger. He knelt gingerly with trepidation upon the ground and said, “Your Highness, the empress invites you (formal) to go over.”

“The empress is inviting you over, so this minor subject will not trouble you.” Luo Wei also seemed to be similarly eager for Fu Yun’s words. After Fu Yun spoke, without waiting for Long Xuan to speak, Luo Wei said right away, “Today is your Highness’s day of great happiness4. This humble subject congratulates your Highness.”

Long Xuan did not respond, he only stared at Luo Wei with an unfaltering gaze.

“This humble subject asks to be excused,” Luo Wei did not wish to stay. Without waiting for Long Xuan’s dismissal, he immediately turned around and departed.

Willow catkins fluttered about as if in reckless abandon, dazzling to the eyes. Long Xuan continuously watched Luo Wei walk out of the rear garden, his heart seized with a sudden burst of aching sorrow, yet he did not call out to stop Luo Wei. He knew at this moment that he failed to retain that currently favoured Brocade Marquis. Long Xuan was usually fond of elegance. This rear garden only had the Inked Pond in one corner, and a bamboo grove all around it. Right now listening to the wind through the bamboo grove and watching the concentric ripples undulating across the surface of the Inked Pond, Long Xuan thought of Luo Wei’s words. Who in this world could truly live only for himself? Today was the day he would marry his proper wife. That woman who would accompany him for a lifetime was right in the Hall of the Gracious Phoenix, together with him within the same palace walls, but not knowing why, Long Xuan still felt that he was a lonely man.

When Luo Wei stepped outside the Hall of Literary Transcendence, the sounds of cheerful music drifted to his ears. Luo Wei did not know where the music came from, yet he knew it was performed by one of the musicians in the palace because ordinary citizens’ budgets could not afford this sort of magnificent palatial performance. Luo Wei aimlessly wandered on a small trail within the palace. He had previously walked along this path with Wei Lan, since it let him avoid the endlessly flowing stream of crowds, while also allowing him to properly take a look at the spring scenery deep within the imperial palace.

Xiao Wei,” Just when Luo Wei was walking while appreciating the fresh flowers blossoming in the grove, he heard a voice off to his side calling to him from within the grove. Luo Wei turned his head to look and saw the Third Prince Long Xing sitting in a stone pavilion within the grove, beckoning to him with hand gestures.

“Why is your Highness here?” Luo Wei walked just outside the pavilion, separated from Long Xing by the pavilion’s railing, and said, “What is the bridegroom doing, hiding here?”

“There’s people everywhere,” Long Xing sat leaning against the pavilion’s railing, gazing expectantly at Luo Wei, and laughed, “At least this grove is considerably tranquil.”

Luo Wei was aware that when he had gone to Long Xuan’s place, perhaps the palace staff all knew as well. Long Xing would not appear here without cause or reason, yet (Luo Wei) did not reveal his thoughts, and laughed, “Wouldn’t it be better to hear more congratulations and ‘may you live a long and happy life together5’?

“Is this the first time I’ve received a woman into the palace?” Long Xing said, “I’ve heard too many of these kinds of words.”

“Oh?” Luo Wei feigned astonishment.

“This is your older cousin6,” Long Xing seemed to have recovered from his indiscretion, immediately cupped his hands together in obeisance to Luo Wei, and said, “as well as my proper wife, completely different from all the other women. I will definitely treat her well, and will definitely not let her suffer any grievances.”

Luo Wei shook his head. Long Xing was someone who liked equivocal word play7—it was not an exaggeration to say he was someone who’d devoured the the Book of Songs8 in reading, yet when this person spoke he completely lacked scholarly air, incredibly vulgar.

“I see that you came here; was it to visit my second brother?” Long Xing asked at this moment.

“I was the Second Highness’s study companion,” Luo Wei said, “The friendly affections of those years were here; I surely had to go offer my congratulations.”

“Friendly affections?” Long Xing laughed mockingly, “Nowadays, I’m not just your older cousin, I will also be the husband of your older female cousin. Will this friendly affection surpass that of my second brother’s or not?”

“Seems like it,” Luo Wei leaned against the pavilion’s railing.

“Then how about compared to his Highness the Crown Prince? Will we be even closer then?”

Luo Wei looked at Long Xing and saw a roguish9 smile. “Why do you need to compare like this?” Luo Wei laughed, “You are all imperial princes. I can only helplessly hope for you to not drift away from me.”

“Then it looks like I still can’t surpass the eldest brother crown prince.” Long Xing said, feigning a broken heart.

“How can that be?” At this moment, Luo Wei said, “Your Highness is my older cousin, and will now become my older female cousin’s husband. Even if it’s with that older female cousin of mine who is aloof beyond worldly affairs10, I would also have to be quite a bit closer to your Highness.”

Long Xing snapped his fingers, “I really like the character ‘Wan’11 in Luo Wan.”

Luo Wei began to laugh softly. When he raised his head, the large trees among the grove reaching to the heavens were luxuriantly dense with foliage and covered this region of the sky.

“For you,” Long Xing threw a fruit into Luo Wei’s hands.

Luo Wei took a look; it was actually an immature green plum12.

“I picked it up from the ground. It’s very sour.” Long Xing said to Luo Wei, “But I should be the first one this year in the palace who savoured the taste of this green plum.”

Season of late spring, the oriole’s song grows old, all red flowers fallen and green plum fruit still small13,” Turning the green plum in his hands, Luo Wei laughed, “Your Third Highness is in fine spirits.”

R:DSAT Chapter 225 – White Jade from Nanzhao

Translated by Uhei and edited by Cyrrene.

The Second Prince Long Xuan and the Third Prince Long Xing both had their grand weddings on the same day, and the capital (Shangdu) once again became inundated in a cacophony of merrymaking. People swept into the streets to witness the two princes receiving their brides, even hoping to see what kind of lunar and flower-like beauty the red veil-covered brides had. Amidst the drumbeats of the procession, two girls were lifted in two large gold-outlined palanquins painted with phoenixes, one from the northern area of the city, one from the eastern part, both heading towards the Imperial Palace.

Surrounding the palanquin were sounds of laughter and cheers, yet within the palanquins one bride was troubled, and the other was uneasy. The lady of the Chang clan didn’t know what was awaiting her in that magnificent-looking palace1. She would not remember the congratulations of the bystanders, but she would only remember the forced smile on the faces of her parents and her elder brother from the main line. On the other hand, the lady of the Luo clan was thinking about how as she changed into this set of marital robes, and boarded the palanquin, she could hear the anguished crying of her grandmother coming from behind her. The tears of the lady of the Luo clan soaked into her luxurious robes. Her grandmother would soon return to Youyan City, and spend the remaining days there. Yet she entered the imperial family, the Imperial tomb in Xiachuan would be her final resting place. For the rest of this life, they would never meet again.

Luo Wei entered the palace in the afternoon this day. Even though he didn’t really feel too genuine about it, but as a subject of the court, he had to express his congratulations to the two princes. The congratulatory gift from the Luo Family had already been sent into the palace yesterday. So even though Luo Wei came in the name of congratulating the marriage, but in truth he only needed to enter the palace empty-handed, kowtow and say some congratulations outside the Empress’ Gracious Phoenix Hall, let the Head of Rites eunuch note down his name, and this round of congratulatory rites would be over.

“Young Master,” The Head Steward eunuch of the Hall of the Gracious Phoenix2, Shang Xi had come up to him after Luo Wei had finished completing the congratulatory rite, and said: “Would you like to enter the palace to see Her Ladyship?”

Luo Wei looked at the people streaming in and out of the Hall of the Gracious Phoenix, each of them looking very busy, “Perhaps not today,” Luo Wei said to Shang Xi: “Her Ladyship will surely be very busy today, I shan’t bother her.”

“Though Young Master has returned to court in victory, Her Ladyship has been occupied with preparations for the grand wedding of the two princes, and couldn’t find the time to meet with Young Master even once,” Shang Xi said to Luo Wei quietly, “Her Ladyship has already repeated this a good few times.”

“Wait a few days,” Luo Wei stuffed a few banknotes into Shang Xi’s hands, this indeed was a loyal one. [Shang Xi] was offering him an explanation on the Empress’ behalf, why the Empress as his aunt couldn’t even summon him, Luo Wei, for a visit even though he had made a long journey back after being stationed in Northern Yan.

Shang Xi received the reward from Luo Wei, and was intending to escort Luo Wei out, but again there was someone calling for him within the palace.

“Go on,” Luo Wei smiled and said: “You don’t need to bother with me today, go do your duties.”

Only then did Shang Xi run back to the Hall of the Gracious Phoenix.

Luo Wei walked out of the Palace, thinking that Emperor Xingwu’s Hall of Eternal Light was surely just as busy as the Hall of the Gracious Phoenix, so he wouldn’t need to go bother them.

“Young Master,” Fu Yun had been waiting for Luo Wei on this arch bridge outside the Hall of the Gracious Phoenix for a long time, and seeing Luo Wei mount a palanquin, he hurriedly went up to it, making a deep bow of greeting towards Luo Wei.

“Why are you here?” Once Luo Wei saw Fu Yun his brows creased as he said: “Do you have any business with me?”

“Replying to Young Master,” Fu Yun said: “My family’s Highness is inviting Young Master to come by Qingwen Palace.”

“Today is the day of His Highness’ grand wedding,” Luo Wei said: “Why would he still have things to say to me?”

“Young Master,” Fu Yun pleaded with Luo Wei: “Just come by this once. This slave does not know what my family’s Highness has to speak with Young Master, but looking at my family’s Highness face, this slave thinks it must surely be something important.”

“What could possibly be more important than the grand wedding today?” Luo Wei said: “You go back and tell his Highness, Luo Wei is ill-fit to disturb him today, but will surely come to visit him on another day.”

“Young Master,” Fu Yun bent at the waist in front of Luo Wei, just about kneeling to Luo Wei, “This slave begs that you take pity on him, my family’s Highness said, if this slave is unable to bring Young Master, this slave will also no longer need to return to Qingwen Palace, and should just go directly to the Cold Palace to stay with the ladies that have sinned.”

“So I actually still have to bear Fu-gonggong’s future prospects in mind ah,” Luo Wei said: “You can rest well assured, your family’s Highness can’t be parted3 from you.”

“Young Master,” Fu Yun saw that Luo Wei was leaving, and really kneeled to Luo Wei this time, saying: “This slave has but one cheap life, not worth mentioning. Young Master, today is the day of my family’s Highness’ wedding, would Young Master please fulfil my family’s Highness’ wishes this once.”

Luo Wei wanted to say, why should I need to fulfil Long Xuan’s wishes? But seeing as the palace servants and eunuchs passing by were all watching them, and knew that now that Fu Yun was kneeling, this incident would be passed on throughout the entire palace within moments. “Lead the way then,” Luo Wei avoided Fu Yun’s kowtow. Fu Yun was Long Xuan’s personal servant, if he continued to let Fu Yun kneel here, who knows what sort of tales would be fabricated about him and Long Xuan by the people within and outside the palace.

“Young Master, this way,” Fu Yun quickly got up from the ground, walking to Luo Wei’s foreside and leading the way for him.

One of the minor eunuchs that served as the Third Prince Long Xing’s personal aides had followed Luo Wei all along the way from the Hall of the Gracious Phoenix to this arch bridge. He’d also wanted to speak with Luo Wei, but unfortunately Fu Yun beat him to it, and he could only stand below the arch bridge in wait. This minor eunuch saw Luo Wei leaving with Fu Yun, and quickly returned to Long Xing’s Fuze Palace to report to Long Xing.

“Why has your family’s Highness returned to Qingwen palace at this time?” Luo Wei asked Fu Yun along the way,

“Replying to Young Master,” Fu Yun said: “His Majesty (the emperor) let my family’s Highness return to rest for a bit.”

“Then what about the Second Prince’s Consort?” Luo Wei asked.

“The Prince Consort is in the Hall of the Gracious Phoenix,” Fu Yun said: “Her Ladyship the Empress still has things to instruct her on.”

Luo Wei no longer had anything else to ask, and followed Fu Yun to the Qingwen Palace. It was a palace that was normally silent and solemn, yet today it was decked with lanterns and coloured banners. Luo Wei looked at all of this jubilation, yet felt nothing for it. “Where is your family’s Highness now?” Luo Wei saw that Fu Yun was leading him to the back of the palace, and stopped to ask him.

“His Highness is waiting at the Inked Pond for Young Master,” Fu Yun said: “May Young Master follow this slave.”

Luo Wei did remember that Qingwen palace had such a pond. Long Xuan liked practising his letters next to this pond when he was younger, and would wash his brushes and inkstone right in the waters of the pond. Hence everyone simply called this pond the Inked Pond, and over time nobody remembered what the pond’s original name was.

Once Fu Yun led Luo Wei to the Inked Pond, he dismissed himself.

“Your Highness,” Luo Wei called out to Long Xuan, who stood by the Inked Pond staring at the waters in a daze.

“Do you still remember what happened right by this pond?” Long Xuan asked without even looking at Luo Wei who was bowing in greeting behind him.

Luo Wei said: “This is where Your Highness practised his letters in the past.”

Long Xuan said: “Anything else?”

Luo Wei said: “What else could there be?”

Long Xuan turned around, and extended his hand for Luo Wei to look.

Luo Wei saw in Long Xuan’s hand; there were actually two halves of a mandarin duck buckle that were buckled together in his palm.

“Do you still remember?” Long Xuan left his palm spread in front of Luo Wei’s eyes.

Of course Luo Wei remembered this mandarin duck buckle, but only thought of it after seeing it. This was what he had personally picked out to give to Long Xuan, it was Nanzhao white jade of the finest quality, he had even engraved letters on its surface. Luo Wei examined the two mandarin ducks’ wings in detail; and sure enough he saw a “Xuan” character and a “Wei” character. “Didn’t Your Highness already throw this away? Why has it returned to Your Highness’ hand?” Luo Wei asked. He remembered very clearly, Long Xuan had thrown a temper with him then, and threw one white jade mandarin duck into the Inked Pond. After Long Xuan left, he also threw the other mandarin duck into the pond.

“I ordered someone to have it dredged up,” Long Xuan said, his voice a little hoarse.

“This thing is truly made of the finest quality white jade,” Luo Wei said indifferently: “But there are tons of other jades better than it within the Palace, Your Highness need not be like this.”

“What about those words?”

“What words?”

“Those words you said when you gave me this mandarin duck buckle.”

What words did he say to Long Xuan at that time? For a moment Luo Wei couldn’t recall, but either way those words were likely nothing more than trying to woo Long Xuan. “Back then this minor subject was still ignorant, Your Highness should just forget all that nonsense talk,” Luo Wei said to Long Xuan: “This minor subject no longer remembers it clearly now.”

1.金碧辉煌 – literally, as splendid as jade and gold. [Return]

2. Fengyi palace, but we’ve kept it named as ‘Hall of the Gracious Phoenix’ for consistency with previous translations. [Return]

3. 离不了 – Luo Wei is implying here that Long Xuan can’t do without Fu Yun, perhaps that he is doing dirty work that he can only trust Fu Yun to do. [Return]
