RDSAT Chapter 222: Three Sons Conferred Marquis Titles

Translated by Cyrrene and edited by Uhei.

The emperor, the princes, and the civil and military officers all left the city to welcome the great army upon their victorious return. The Imperial palace guards, the Feathered Forest1 Imperial army, and the Six battalions of the East and West were all mobilised; the spectacle was so large that it rendered people speechless. Outside the northern city wall, Luo Wei, who had been conferred Brocade Marquis on the spot, was doubtlessly the one in the limelight2 that day. The third young master Luo, still in his teens, had been bestowed the rank of marquis while also possessing outstanding beauty. That day as he walked past on the streets that had been rinsed clean, it was not known how many young girls’ hearts he captivated, or in how many young men’s hearts he invoked envy.

Soon after Emperor Xingwu, without reservations, awarded each of the subjects who returned from Black Frost City with accomplishments. The Luo family’s eldest son Luo Qi and second son Luo Ze, after Luo Wei, were also granted the title of marquis. Luo Qi was the Grand Commandant of the three armies this time, so to be conferred a marquis title for his military exploits was beyond question. Luo Ze’s marquis title conferment drew many remarks, however, Emperor Xingwu clarified in the edict that bestowed Luo Ze as the Dingwu Marquis, his conferral was because of his many years of service guarding the capital. This reason made everyone only able to whisper secretly behind their backs, not daring to speak openly in public.

Luo Zhiqiu’s three sons were all conferred marquis titles. The Senior Chancellor’s Luo estate was for a while unparalleled in their fame; the numerous visitors that came to offer congratulations and well-wishes nearly trampled down the Chancellor estate’s doorway threshold.

Luo Wei was not in the mood to pay attention to the liveliness at home. With the excuse that his body needed to recuperate, he did not go to greet the guests who came to add flowers to the brocade3, except for Zhao Henian—the Zhao clan brothers who were old family friends of the Luo family. Only then did Luo Wei come out to meet them for a bit; during the rest of the time he just stayed within his own courtyard.

Of course, Luo Wei could not have possibly slept the whole time he stayed in his own courtyard; he spent the whole day with Wei Lan so close they might as well be rubbing their fringes together4. Luo Wei did not go outside for several days after returning to the capital, and invited Ning Fei over to consult for a couple of days. Soon after, Great Zhou’s Jianghu gave rise to stormy waves, and Mingjian Villa was shut down by the authorities. The villa master Ning Shuying, from being the leader among the righteous martial arts community, became a criminal declared for arrest by the imperial court overnight. The Yu Zhou mine case, which had already been closed, was once again unearthed by local authorities. After (the investigations of) Yu Zhou’s officials, Mingjian Villa became the first aristocratic martial family implicated in the Yu Zhou mine case.

Just when people were still startled over Mingjian Villa’s tumultuous collapse, the martial families with close ties with Mingjian Villa were also investigated in succession. Commoners do not fight the government5—the people of the Jianghu were also merely commoners, even with many skilled heroic figures among them, yet when faced with this type of suppression from both above and below, there was not much they could do. Either they simply admit defeat at the mercy of others, or they abandon their families and businesses, desperately fleeing to the ends of the earth.

When the influence of one party collapses, there will be another new power to replace it. The people of the past thought it was the Qilin Villa’s turn to unify the Jianghu. No one expected the Qilin Villa to remain silent during this time, close its doors, instead passing their days honestly, maintaining an overall disregard for the Jianghu’s affairs. During these days, the biggest news people heard from Qilin Villa was that Luo Tingchao’s eldest son Luo Haisheng became gravely ill. This illness left him almost permanently in bed6, becoming handicapped.

Since the Qilin Villa’s master did not make an appearance, the various clans and factions of the Jianghu began another round of disputes. Anyone could become the martial community’s next Mingjian Villa. Another episode of bloodbath7 within Great Zhou’s Jianghu seemed inevitable. The memorial reported to the imperial court from the local officials all mentioned that the carnage among the Jianghu was increasingly intense.

Just when the people of the Jianghu had already gone berserk8‘, the feudal reign of Mingjian Villa was already dissolved by the local officials. All the properties of Mingjian Villa were returned to the already second-class ranked general Ningfei, who was granted a position as Xuanwei General, Ning Zizhou. The people of the Jianghu who had been killing to their hearts’ content finally understood that the presumed reinvestigation of the Yu Zhou mine case, which had rendered Ning Shuying—this type of figure in the Jianghu who stirred up trouble9—into a criminal by imperial decree, and raised such a ruckus, were all just a pretext for Ning Zizhou, this sixth young master who had already severed all ties with Mingjian Villa, to be able to take control of Mingjian Villa.

After Ning Fei obtained Mingjian Villa, shortly after, he married Xiangdong prefectural governor Fu Jingzong’s daughter10, and became the Quyu Fu family’s son-in-law. For a dancer’s11 son to rise to such a position like this today, people couldn’t help but sigh emotionally at Ning Fei’s good fortune and excellent future prospects.

Long Xuan watched Fu Yun displaying each piece of clothing he would be wearing on his grand wedding day while listening to the scouts reporting on Ning Fei’s wedding scene.

“Did the third young master Luo also attend?” Long Xuan asked.

“He went,” the scout replied, “except he did not go to the main hall, but only stayed in the rear hall.”

“You may leave,” Long Xuan had the scout retreat. It was as if he wasn’t concerned about Ning Fei’s wedding, but was concerned about whether Luo Wei had attended the occasion.

“Your Highness,” Fu Yun cautiously and gently asked Long Xuan, “Are you satisfied with the clothes?”

“These were sent by the Hall of the Gracious Phoenix,” Long Xuan said, “In what way could I be dissatisfied?”

Fu Yun didn’t dare speak. This time Luo Zhiyi simultaneously prepared for Long Xuan and Long Xing’s grand weddings. From Fu Yun’s viewpoint as a person who was entirely devoted to Long Xuan, Luo Zhiyi handled this issue flawlessly. Everything regarding Long Xuan’s was rushed here first, that Long Xing on the contrary, couldn’t see how much this empress cared about her own son.

“Go put them all away,” Long Xuan said.

Fu Yun quickly had someone come to put away all the items that were laid out.

Peace had finally been restored for Long Xuan when Long Xiang suddenly came to visit. Long Xiang was delighted about his older brother’s grand wedding. When he entered Long Xuan’s study room, he said to Long Xuan, “Brother, today I saw our mother.”

Long Xuan’s usually indifferent facial expression suddenly revealed astonishment at this. He said, “How did you enter the Hall of Blossoming Beauty?”

Long Xiang said, “I requested from the empress, and she allowed me to go. She also said that if brother wishes to see mother before the grand wedding, you can also go see her.”

“How was mother when you saw her?”

“Shang Xi from the Hall of the Gracious Phoenix followed, so I wasn’t able to get closer.” Long Xiang shook his head and waved his fist, “Mother was sleeping on a daybed. The curtains weren’t lifted, so I couldn’t see our mother’s appearance.”

“How does this count as seeing her?” Long Xuan said.

“What else could I do?” Long Xiang said to Long Xuan, “You’re the one who told me to respect the empress, otherwise our mother will have to suffer.”

“Then what did you say to our mother?” Long Xuan asked again.

“Mother said she was fine right now. She has always been taking the medicine sent by the Imperial Medical Ward,” Long Xiang repeated the words back like a parrot10, “She said that with the empress looking after both of us, she can be at ease and focus on her recovery. And also, she said she really missed the Empress Dowager. I also don’t know how the Empress Dowager is, so I had difficulty answering our mother.” When Long Xiang said this, he was slightly vexed again. “Brother, otherwise next time I will go request the empress to have her allow me to see the Empress Dowager.”

“You need Imperial Father’s decree in order to see the Empress Dowager,” Long Xuan said, “What use is there to seek the Empress Dowager?”

Long Xiang sat down in a chair across from Long Xuan and said, “Your place is so cold and cheerless. Long Xing’s place is much more lively. Brother, I saw that Luo clan’s daughter. That saying was so accurate, ‘Youyan’s beautiful girls are aplenty’—she was a great beauty.”

“Aren’t you so bored?”

“Not like I wanted to see. Yesterday, she was over at the empress’s, okay. When I went in, I only saw the profile of her face,” Long Xiang said, “I also asked the empress. This Luo clan’s girl is older than Luo Wei by a few months. She could be considered Luo Wei’s older paternal cousin.”

“So what?” Long Xuan said, “What exactly are you trying to tell me?”

“I’m saying the Luo clan is so impressive right now,” Long Xiang thought about it and felt it was unjustified, “If this time you had brought me along to Northern Yan, I could also establish an outstanding battle record. Even if I couldn’t compare to either you or Luo Wei, I’m at least stronger than Ning Fei? That brat managed to rise to second-class general rank in one go! What kind of reasoning is this?”

Long Xuan said, “Based on the way you currently idle around when attending the Study, you can’t compare to him!”

When Long Xuan mentioned attending the Study, Long Xiang stopped talking, and immersed himself in eating the snacks on the nearby tea table.

For Ning Fei to be able to receive a second-class general rank, Luo Wei must have exerted his resources considerably. On Ning Fei’s behalf, it could be said that Luo Wei exhausted all his tricks and scheming. Long Xuan also couldn’t see any reason for Ning Fei to not wholly dedicate his utmost to the Luo family. (Long Xuan) had originally believed that Luo Wei would destroy the Mingjian Villa, but had not anticipated that with a sleight of hand, Mingjian Villa would be sent to Ning Fei. This move was undoubtedly brilliant.

Is the Gentleman Feeling Alright? – Chapter 37

Flowers bloomed on the crosspaths between fields1, the poplar and willow foliage thicken like smoke2. Spring was approaching, and with it the time for the seasonal hunt neared.

The Grand Secretary Su Shiyu had always handled matters stably and reliably, taking the past few days to handle the various matters suitably, after which he compiled a memorial and entered the palace to present it for the emperor’s perusal.

Li Yanzhen took a rough glance over it and nodded, “This is fine, We can always be assured with how Beloved Subject Su conducts matters.” He put the memorial to one side, “Beloved Subject seems to still have something to say?”

“Yes,” Su Shiyu knelt down, “May His Majesty temporarily grant military authority3 over the Southern border’s troops to this subject.”

Li Yanzhen said bewilderedly, “Authority over the Southern border troops?”

“Indeed. This subject was informed by someone a few days ago, and after a few days of investigation I discovered that although the Huainan King’s case has been resolved, but there are many points of suspicion that remain. Even if there isn’t a conspiracy within it, I’m afraid when the time comes he definitely won’t come quietly either4. The King of Huainan has countless skilled troops in his employ, and the soldiers in the imperial retinue cannot be compared to them5 after all. If [I] have the aid of the Southern border’s armed troops6, there will be the means to deal with even unforeseen changes should they suddenly occur.” Su Shiyu elaborated, “Once this subject returns to court he will surely have the military authority timely returned, there will definitely not be any attempts to delay.”

Li Yanzhen laughed, “Why explain yourself, We will not suspect you of having ulterior motives. However,” He paused, and let out a sigh, “Beloved Subject should also know, the Military Seal is not in Our hands. Even if We were to give you our word now, whether or not Beloved Subject Chu will give it to you, remains to be seen.”

“Your Majesty need not worry about that, this subject will personally make a trip over to Grand Marshall Chu’s side. Surely he won’t defy an Imperial edict; if this can be an opportunity to take back the Military Seal (into the Emperor’s possession), then that would be the best outcome.”

Li Yanzhen nodded in agreement, but soon after looked like troubles had arisen to the forefront of his mind, “Speaking of Beloved Subject Su, you’ll be away from court for many days, if he were to take this chance to act out, what ever should [we] do?”

“That is exactly what this subject intends.” The colour of Su Shiyu’s pupils slightly sharpened.

“……What does Beloved Subject intend?”

(T/N: It’s sad that this doesn’t translate very well, but what LYZ says here is basically “no, what do you mean, that’s what you intend” lol)

Su Shiyu lowered his eyes, and said in an unhurried manner, “Exactly as what Your Majesty has said, during this subject’s absence, Grand Marshall Chu will naturally have fewer concerns, and we can also take this as a chance to clearly see what exactly he’s plotting. If something major occurs, [I] can rush back within a day if riding a horse whip and spur7.”

“……Testing [him]?” Li Yanzhen pondered it deeply for a moment, and then nodded in agreement, “Let it be as Beloved Subject says.”

Within the study, Chu Mingyun reclined against the chair lazily. When Su Shiyu had explained his purpose for coming, he then nodded, and said absently, “This8 matter is matter is of grave importance, naturally I need to comply. I’ll write a letter of instruction right away, Master Su just needs to go pass it to the head of the troops over on that side.”

“Master Chu, since antiquity, the rules have always required a protectorate general to act only after seeing the Military Seal.” Su Shiyu reminded him.

“Of course I know that,” Chu Mingyun laid out the letter paper, “It’s just that to prevent any breaches in security, the Military Seal isn’t placed here in my residence. Yet Master Su’s itinerary is already set, I’m afraid going to retrieve it would delay [you] a good few days. A letter will work just as well, no need to worry.” He said it so casually, and suddenly lifted his eyes to look at Su Shiyu, lips lifting in a quick sliver of a smile, “Besides, that military seal is all hard and cold, how can it compare to a letter written personally by me. Who knows, seeing it daily might even let Master Su think of me more.”

The intent to refuse was already made apparent; Su Shiyu was long prepared for this and didn’t insist, but after hearing that last phrase, he smiled a bit helplessly, “Even without the letter, I’m afraid it will be difficult not to think of Master Chu.”

“Woh—?” Chu Mingyun was in the midst of handing over the letter; upon hearing those words he used the momentum to grasp Su Shiyu’s hand, his smile growing deeper, and lowering his tone he said: “In that case, then Master Su may as well not return to his residence tonight, how about you stay over and keep me company?”

Su Shiyu pulled back his hand and withdrew a step, smiling faintly and avoiding his gaze as he said: “Master Chu is so busy with his duties, how could I possibly impose.”

Chu Mingyun retracted his hand as if bored, and said suddenly, “Right, on this trip to Huainan I’m afraid Master Su won’t be able to return for at least half a month, since you are intent on going in person, I’m certain the varied matters at court have all been arranged suitably?”

“The numerous matters at court are muddled and hard to fathom, what is there to speak of arrangements beforehand.” Su Shiyu glanced at him, “But since there is Master Chu here, what is there for me to worry about?”

Chu Mingyun’s pupils narrowed a slightly, understanding it clearly in his mind, and soon laughed, “Master Su has already said this much, seems like I can’t but perform a little better ah.

Su Shiyu didn’t respond, he studied the letter in his hand, and suddenly spoke up to ask: “The discipline amongst armies subordinate to Master Chu has always been held to the strictest standards, then if there is a letter and the Military seal present at the same time, I wonder which one the commander will obey?”

Chu Mingyun propped his cheek in his hand, staring at him before slowly smiling as he said: “Both the letter and Military Seal would come from my hand, so the orders wouldn’t contradict anyway, why distinguish on this?”

Su Shiyu lifted his pupils to meet his eyes, smiling faintly, “Nothing much, just asking idly after a random thought is all.”

Outside it had begun at some unknown point to drizzle with rain, twilight filling out in all directions9. The breeze brought along with it a slight chill, yet the warmth of Chu Mingyun’s palm faintly lingered on his fingers. Su Shiyu inhaled a deep breath of air to suppress the palpitations that had arisen in his heart.

He turned around and glanced at the Grand Marshall Residence door inscription shrouded in the rainy mist, and again took out the sealed letter in his sleeve, sighing lowly, “It seems…..the Southern border troops have already changed its surname to Chu.”

In the beginning of March, the Grand Secretary set out on behalf of the Heaven’s Mandate (the Emperor), and patrolled the vassal territories on inspection in fulfilment of the emperor’s order.

It was a fine and clear sunny day, the spring clouds gathering round. Li Yanzhen brought the entire court of ministers both civil and martial to escort the envoy procession out of Chang’an city. With flags and banners raised in the air in an imposing display of insignia10, the sounds of drums rose to the skies, and gradually descended.

Offering wine was poured out on the ground in libation11, stirring up a slow drift of fine sand. The fragrance of wine was strong and sweet-smelling; accompanied by the singing of arias.

Su Shiyu bent forward and knelt right in the center, listening to Li Yanzhen finish reading the verses of the ceremonial rite, and receiving the Seal with both hands. Only then did he stand up again and bow respectfully.

Once the ceremony was over, Li Yanzhen studied the person in front of him for a moment, and spoke up to urge him again: “On this journey, [We] hope that Beloved Subject will take extra care.”

“Many thanks to Your Majesty for the concern.” Su Shiyu replied.

Seeing him stand up, the carriage procession behind him began making preparations to set off. Su Shiyu bade Li Yanzhen farewell, turning around to walk towards the carriage. As he brushed shoulders with Chu Mingyun while passing by him, he could not help taking another glance, and was caught off-guard by the other’s gaze meeting his directly, those eyes as deep as the ocean.

“Master Su,” Chu Mingyun suddenly reached out his hand and pulled him to a stop, and said in a tone which emotions could not be determined from, “Don’t die on me out there ah.”

His voice was bland, nearly without any undulation in pitch. Only a few officials behind him could vaguely hear it, and instantly their expressions became interesting12 and varied.

Su Shiyu was also stunned for a bit, and could not guess at his intentions, thinking of how he was uncharacteristically sombre and silent today while staring into the distance as they went outside the city, and laughed casually, “Master Chu can rest assured, [I] definitely won’t.”

Su Shiyu’s arm was slender like the rest of him. He subconsciously gripped it a little tighter, steadily gazing into those eyes filled with humor; and could not help but slowly hook up the corners of his lips, leaning up close to whisper lowly right in Su Shiyu’s ear, “Then Master Su should remember to return sooner, lest my longing becomes lovesickness13.”

Su Shiyu’s posture abruptly slipped, and turned his head around to look. The two pairs of eyes met they were only a few inches apart, and the usually reserved and discreet Grand Secretary suddenly could not spare the presence of mind that this was in under the scrutiny of the public eye; he could only hear his heart beat like a thundering drum, and in an extremely rare display he didn’t move away at all, only lowering his eyes and laughing lightly:

“Alright.” He responded warmly, his voice like the chiming of jade and the blooming of flowers14.

T/N: TITLE DROP BLURB DROP BLURB DROP! Susu has fallen hard this is not a drill!
Hi, I’m really sorry for leaving you all hanging. I’ve been doing more stuff for the a Danmei reading server on discord lately! Come say hi and discuss novels with us. You’ll get updates on translations for novels and audio dramas I guess.
Part of the reason I’ve been away is that I wanted to confirm what the status of JYJF is with 如似我闻 (the author), and she said that she’s fine with me continuing to have an English translation available free. She doesn’t have plans for the time being to have an official translation yet. So this novel is not being dropped. My friend helped me to message her since my Weibo got locked:

However, I may lock the site if I ever find people distributing offline copies / posting on aggregator sites. In that case, I’ll probably share the password for 1-2 weeks before locking the site.

1.陌上花开 – ‘Mo’ are the little paths on the ground in between fields. [Return]

2.杨柳堆烟 – Both these plants have thin branches and leaves, so they thicken gradually. [Return]

3.兵权 – basically having control over troops, the right to command their commander. This authority is usually granted with a specially made seal (sometimes called ‘虎符’, tiger seal’) that is owned by the court and the Emperor unless it is handed to a prominent general or martial official during wartime. Since they only referred to this seal as ‘兵符’, I’ll just use the generic term ‘Military Seal’. [Return]

4.束手就擒 – literally; caught just with the outreach of one’s hand. In this context, the King of Huainan won’t be so easily caught because he won’t surrender without a fight. [Return]

5.相提并论 – comparable; literally ‘to be mentioned in the same discussion’. [Return]

6.兵甲 – this term translates more accurately to armaments since it refers to weaponry and armour and whatnot, but I think in the context that Susu is referring to that would be kind of strange. [Return]

7.快马加鞭 – literally, ‘on quickened horse with extra whipping (spurring). [Return]

8.兹 – very formal term for ‘this’ [Return]

9.薄暮四合 – literally ‘thin dusk’ in the ‘four cardinal directions’, i.e. all over. [Return]

10.仪仗威严 – You should have seen this in Chapter 28. [Return]

11.祭酒傾杯于地 [Return]

12.精彩 – as in they probably looked shocked/scandalised/stupefied. [Return]

13. 思想成疾 – Yes, this is the same ‘lovesickness’ as in the blurb! [Return]

14. 落玉繁花 – the first two characters may be a reference from《琵琶行》, a Tang Dynasty series of poems, and the second two refer to feelings overtaking the heart, either of joy or, well, passion. [Return]

R:DSAT Chapter 221: A Lifetime in Brocade Comfort

Translated by Uhei and edited by Cyrrene.

Luo Wei dismounted his horse at quite a distance from Emperor Xingwu and his officials, and walked quickly over to where the emperor was standing. After seeing his second brother Luo Ze standing behind Emperor Xingwu, and knowing that Luo Ze was taking up his post as the Escorting General—this meant that Luo Ze’s leg injury had completely healed, it was only then that Luo Wei’s spirits really lifted, the smile on his face becoming more obvious.

The crowd looked toward Luo Wei.

Luo Wei wasn’t clad in armour1, wearing only a deep-blue riding suit. The dark coloured robes only made Luo Wei’s skin seem all the more snow-pale, the riding suit accentuated Luo Wei’s youthful figure, and added some heroic spirit. Luo Wei had long been given a reputation for being sickly, yet after people saw this Luo Wei that had returned from the battlefield, they realised; this generation of the Luo family truly all had the character of those in the army. Even the youngest Luo Wei also had the valiant bearing of a hero2; you couldn’t see the air of a bookworm that enveloped Luo Zhiqiu’s person.

“This humble subject Luo Wei greets His Majesty, may my Emperor long live, live to ten thousand years3.” Luo Wei kneeled in front of Emperor Xingwu, executing a grand salute.

Emperor Xingwu received Luo Wei’s salute, and walked up to him, personally pulling up Luo Wei from his kneel, saying: “Wei’er, were you injured at all on this trip?”

Luo Wei laughed: “Replying to Your Majesty, this humble subject wasn’t ever risking my life fighting on the battlefield, and wasn’t injured.”

“Then is your body still alright?” Emperor Xingwu asked again.

“This humble subject is fine,” Luo Wei said: “This humble subject thanks His Majesty for his concern.”

Emperor Xingwu liked the Luo Wei in front of him the more he looked at him; this was the son he had with Luo Zhijin ah, “You’ve grown taller,” Emperor Xingwu said to Luo Wei, gratified: “Like an adult now!”

Luo Wei also knew how to ply Emperor Xingwu’s favour; hearing Emperor Xingwu say that, he said with some disgruntlement: “Your Majesty, this humble subject was already an adult.”

“This child!” Emperor Xingwu fell for this shtick of Luo Wei’s after all, laughing uproariously. Then, pulling Luo Wei to his side, he first pointed at Luo Zhiqiu and then to Luo Ze before saying: “Your father and brother are here, let them speak, are you a child or an adult?”

Luo Zhiqiu laughed, shaking his head.

Luo Ze had always been a carefree character, and poked fun as well saying: “Yunqi still isn’t married, he can’t be considered an adult.”

Once Luo Ze said that, everyone at the scene laughed.

Long Xuan opened his mouth and said: “Who knows what type of lady Yunqi likes, how about Imperial Father pick one out for him.”

Emperor Xingwu said: “Long Xuan, you’ve said this well. Wei’er, what kind of lady do you like? Tell us, We will let your aunt find her for you.”

Luo Wei glanced at Long Xuan seemingly inadvertently, and then smiled at Emperor Xingwu saying: “Your Majesty, this humble subject has yet to think of this matter. The grand matter of marriage, this humble subject dares not make his own call. This humble subject also believes in affinity, let it all depend on fate.”

“Affinity,” Emperor Xingwu nodded saying: “Wei’er, you’ve said this well, ten years cultivates into sharing the same boat, and a hundred years cultivates into sleeping with shared pillows; the tie between husband and wife is affinity ah. Long Xuan, Long Xing,” Emperor Xingwu then turned to his second and third son, saying: “You are about to be married soon, so you also need to cherish affinity.”

“Subject son listens carefully to Imperial Father’s teachings,” Long Xuan and Long Xing quickly replied.

“Luo Wei, listen and receive your reward.” Emperor Xingwu suddenly turned to Luo Wei again and said.

Luo Wei didn’t expect that Emperor Xingwu would confer his reward outside the western city wall of the capital (Shangdu), and he looked at Luo Zhiqiu, hoping to see a hint of what might be wrong from his father.

“Luo Wei,” Emperor Xingwu said: “Didn’t you hear what We said?”

“This humble subject listens and receives,” Luo Wei didn’t have time to think more deeply on it, and quickly fell into a kneel.

Emperor Xingwu stepped a few paces away from Luo Wei, and said in a heavy voice: “The return of Black Frost City has been the wish of many generations of my Greater Zhou’s rulers, and the earnest hope of its tens of thousands of subjects and civilians. Now having been fulfilled this day, such a glorious feat, is worthy of the celebration of all under heaven. The Senior Chancellor’s Third Son Luo Wei, has been gifted with intellect from young, apprenticed under the Son of Heaven, has outstanding literary talent, and is sharp-witted and capable, with a noble personality. As the one with the greatest merit in the return of Black Frost City, this child can be considered to be returning in brocade to his hometown10, conferred the noble title of Marquis, and will be named the Brocade Marquis.”

For a long while after Emperor Xingwu’s words sounded, the entire west gate of the capital was completely silent, and one could hear a pin drop.

Luo Wei remained on the ground, stunned.

The crowd of officials were also shocked into stillness.

Luo Wei indeed achieved a great merit, but noble titles were offered in the order of Baron, Viscount, Count, Marquis, Duke5; a young man without any other prior accomplishments to his name is being conferred the title of Marquis right off the bat? Isn’t this kind of conferment a little too much?

“Wei’er,” Seeing Luo Wei kneeling there in a daze, Emperor Xingwu said: “What are you doing still spacing out? Still not accepting the edict?”

“Your Majesty,” Luo Wei deliberated for half the day (figuratively) before replying: “What merit or ability does this humble subject have to be conferred the title of Marquis? The return of Black Frost City is not this humble subject’s merit alone, this humble subject does not dare accept such a reward.”

When Luo Zhiqiu heard Emperor Xingwu was conferring Luo Wei the title of Brocade Marquis, in his mind it was like something exploded, emanating waves of pain. Brocade Marquis, was this really addressing how Luo Wei was returning to his hometown in glory, or was he talking about his little sister Luo Zhijin? At this present day, Luo Zhijin’s rosy face had already turned to bleached bones, yet this emperor still kept her fondly in his memory; was this a boon or a bane for Luo Wei? “Your Majesty,” Luo Zhiqiu again kneeled to Emperor Xingwu and said, “My little son Luo Wei still isn’t ready to take on large responsibilities, if you want this child to become a talent, there is yet the proof of time, this subject also humbly requests that Your Majesty takes back this edict.”

“Senior Chancellor need not be overly humble,” Emperor Xingwu had already proclaimed this conferment in front of the masses, how could he take it back? Luo Wei was his blood-related son; it was already suffering him an injustice to have him live in the Senior Chancellor’s residence, let alone being conferred Marquis title, even if it were the title of Prince, Emperor Xingwu was also willing.

“Your Majesty,” Luo Wei said from where he knelt on the ground: “This humble subject is a scholar, this humble subject is still thinking of entering the imperial examinations next year, how about waiting until this humble subject has accomplished merit in the exams, before he enters court.”

“Why are you saying this?” Emperor Xingwu said: “You’re born of the Chancellor’s household, do you still need to enter the imperial examinations with such a background? We know what you’re capable of, and don’t need you to write another embellished essay. The accomplishments in this world are all awarded by Us, and now that We are giving you an accomplished title, you should just receive it. Wei’er, We are conferring you the Brocade Marquis, because we wish a lifetime in comfort and luxury, you understand Our intentions?”

A lifetime of comfort and luxury? A quake ran through the crowd’s hearts, this was wishing Luo Wei a lifetime in honour and luxury ah. The Senior Chancellor Luo Zhiqiu was only conferred the title of Marquis only three years after he took office, and only six years later was he promoted to Duke. While his two older brothers were still only Counts, this Luo Wei was already a Marquis, it seemed this son’s honour and standing was going to outstrip that of his father and brothers’.

“Your Majesty,” Grandmaster Fu Yi walked over among the convoy of monks, walking straight in front of Emperor Xingwu, bringing both palms together, bending forward and reciting a buddhist mantra.

“It must have been tough for the Grand Priest to make this journey,” Emperor Xingwu said.

“The ones who have it tough are those in the army,” Grandmaster Fu Yi said: “It is not considered a hardship for us ascetics.”

Emperor Xingwu sighed: “There have been countless soldiers from many generations of my Greater Zhou that have died on the battlefield of Black Frost City, and now these loyal souls are finally able to return to their soil of their homeland, this is a great merit of the Grand Priest’s ah.”

Grandmaster Fu Yi looked towards Luo Wei, and said: “This is also a merit6 of the Brocade Marquis, this humble monk congratulates Young Master on being conferred the title of Marquis.”

“Wei’er,” Emperor Xingwu said: “Did you hear what the Grand Priest said?”

“Luo Wei accepts the decree, thanking His Majesty for the generous reward,” Luo Wei kowtowed to express thanks for the imperial favour.

Luo Zhiqiu and Luo Ze also kneeled, as Luo Wei’s father and brothers, they also needed to thank Emperor Xingwu for the imperial favour. That Luo Wei was conferred a Marquis title, was a glorious thing for the entire Youyan Luo Clan.

No matter what opinion the people in the crowd privately held, at this time they all had to say a word of congratulation to the little Marquis Luo.

What Luo Wei desired in this life has never been glory and honour7. Being conferred as the Brocade Marquis, [didn’t even bring] the slightest bit of joy to Luo Wei’s heart, and only carried a smile on his face, returning the officials’ greetings one-by-one.

Long Yu also wanted to go up and express his congratulations. Thinking that it would also be good to bring his group of brothers along, he looked at Long Xuan who was right next to him. With this glance he then realised, Long Xuan had pinned his gaze to Luo Wei, with a complicated light in his eyes. It actually made Long Yu uncertain as to whether this person (Long Xuan) was happy or furious at this moment.
